Terminology Tuesday – Habitat For Humanity ReStore

(Note: I think it’s important to know the terminology and words used when learning any new business including mobile home investing. I came up with ‘Terminology Tuesday’ as a way to go over the terminology used in the mobile home business. It’s important to know the terminology when talking to people in the business so you’re all on the same page).

For years, I’ve been told countless times by many contractors and park managers that I should definitely check out the local Habitat ReStore. After all these years, I finally did!

Before I go into my experience, let me just say – I’m a big supporter of Habitat For Humanity. In fact, it’s my #1 charity. (Goodwill comes a close 2nd). I’ve personally participated in their volunteer program helping to build homes and have even been a house captain for my local REI club.

(Note: In fact, I’m in touch with my local Habitat chapter and have been going on and off helping out when I can with their local house builds).

In any case, I didn’t really know what to expect with the Habitat ReStore. I had heard stories from contractors and park managers that it was a good place to find good and used building materials  if I knew what I was looking for. Quite honestly, I didn’t really think there would be much selection in terms of materials offered. I was wrong.

Let me just say, I was amazed at what the Habitat ReStore had to offer. To me, it seemed like a paradise of items – it was much bigger than I had thought. And, not everything was used. Believe it or not, there were a lot of items being sold that were still in boxes. I guess they were donated by large companies who did not need them anymore.

With that being said, I will say – you really do need to know what you’re looking for beforehand. Otherwise, you may just be overwhelmed.

Since I have some experience with fix-up work and was going specifically to find items that can be used for mobile home fix-ups, I spotted things that I would definitely use which were very discounted from what can be bought at my local Home Depot or Lowes store. In fact, many of these items were still in boxes and/or their plastic wrap – they were still new.

    Whenever we’re doing renos we always go to the restore with the things we aren’t going to keep in the property and for the little things we might need. The best is if you need a sink to fit a certain counter or vice versa – they often have those. There’s also great deals on lights and lamps and faucets. Very cool and for a great cause. Good stuff Rachel!!!

    • Awesome to hear, Julie! 🙂 I cannot believe that I just visited the store after all these years!! When I first heard about it, I thought it would be a really small place with not that much selection – I was soooo wrong! All this time, I’ve been going to Lowes and Home Depot for building materials and supplies, eek!! Oh, cool to hear about finding a sink there to fit a certain counter, thanks for sharing your experience and for stopping by! 🙂
